I think this is breaking news? I am currently attending the NAACP national convention in San Antonio Texas. I am sitting in the federal legislative and public policy workshop. In my education packet there is a new issue brief addressing high-stakes testing.

The NAACP is now publicly opposing high-stakes testing! This stand builds on our legacy of opposition articulated in Debra P v. Turlington case.

This is a step forward from 2015.

  2. I applaud the NAACP’s opposition to using a single standardized test score to determine children’s promotion or graduation. I thank you for your active role in contributing to the NAACP’s policies on education. Of course this has been the position of the American Psychological Association for years.
    The statement in Diane Ravitch’s column announcing this stand, speaks of normed tests. As an educational psychologist active in Save Our Schools and related efforts, I want to say that the criterion based standardized tests are just as harmful. It may be that criterion related tests are more easily manipulated. Here in New York State setting the cut score on the state ELA and math achievement tests so that 70% of children are labeled not proficient is a dramatic indication that this is a political device, not related to improving learning and instruction.
