New Truth For America podcast episode: Should TFA be banned in Low-Income schools?

Episode 19 of the Truth For America podcast was LIVE at a California state capitol research forum entitled: Should TFA be banned? The conversation features Dr. Kerry Kretchmar (Carroll University), Dr. Barb Veltri (North Arizona University), Dr. Lori Rhodes (Sonoma State), and Assemblymember Cristina Garcia (D-Bell Gardens). Considering California Assembly Bill 221 (2019), which would ban TFA in low-income schools, the forum explored TFA research and experience. Asm. Garcia talks about her motivations for the bill and researchers discuss and review the research about TFA.

Truth For America is a podcast about Teach For America (TFA) that provides voice to educators, parents, students, and other key stakeholders. Truth For America is co-hosted by Dr. Julian Vasquez Heilig and Dr. T. Jameson Brewer.

Jameson wasn’t able to make the forum because he was snowed in at the Denver airport.

Truth For America is sponsored by the Network for Public Education Action.

  • Patrick Crabtree

I was President of the local in Atla ta when Beverly Hall brought in all the TFA and cheating. They never added anything to the education of APS students. TFA thought they were so much better than our veteran educators. They could only follow scripts, not teach.

  • Teach for America has been on my mind after reading “None of the Above: The untold story of the Atlanta Public Schools cheating scandal, corporate greed, and the criminalization of Educators” by Shani Robinson and Anna Simonton (2019). Ms. Robinson was a 1st grade TFA teacher caught up in and convicted (shamelessly) by the “powerful” starting with the Governor of GA who is now the President’s Sec. of Agriculture. This Bill in CA has powerful interests against it, as you’ll hear, – the same interests as in Atlanta. Soon to come: also tells this story -watch. We just need to “Carry It On” and I thank Dr. Vasquez-Heilig for doing so. Both he and Dr.Joyce E. King also a PhD graduate from Stanford University. She is an esteemed professor at Georgia State University in Atlanta, formerly my professor at UNO, and, past president of AERA. I thank you both. Finally, let me recommend the book: “Carry it On” .. it tells the real political story about the region of Alabama where my Teacher Corps experiences in 1968 occurred. I attended UWA under Dr. Brown of Greene County. He was the first: -post- Jim Crow African American Superintendent in the South. I worked under him and with “Mr. Bill” Abernathy in Linden, Alabama near Selma, Alabama. Dr. Joyce E. King arranged for Dr. Robert Brown’s story and accomplishments to be presented at AERA, Chicago, 2014 which led to a publication: “More than Race: The “Full Employment” Civil Rights Work of Robert Brown, Alabama’s first Black public school superintendent” In: Southern Studies: An Interdisciplinary Journal of the South, Spring/Summer 2018, 25(1) : 1-47.
