Should teens be taught by AI sex robots? This may seem like a ludicrous question for an article, but if you have been watching the news, it’s a real thing this week.
After public outcry, a New York school district just paused plans to introduce a life-like humanoid robot named Sally as an AI teaching assistant after widespread criticism from educators, parents, community members, and New York State Education Commissioner Betty Rosa. Sally was expected to interact with students at Salamanca High School, a district serving the Allegany Territory of the Seneca Nation. The controversy intensified because the robot was manufactured by Realbotix, a company affiliated with the maker of RealDoll sex dolls. While Sally itself was reportedly not an adult product, the connection understandably raised questions about judgment, public trust, and whether school leaders had fully considered the ethical implications of placing a humanoid AI robot in front of teens.
Yet the larger issue is not one robot. It is how we define the role of artificial intelligence in education. Artificial intelligence is hot topic. Like the SPSS stats program, Excel, calculators, or search engines, AI is a tool. Researchers use statistical software to analyze data, not to think for them. Teachers can use AI to organize lessons, translate materials for multilingual families, summarize research, analyze student data, or reduce repetitive administrative work. Used in those ways, AI can potentially increase productivity while allowing educators to spend more time mentoring students, building relationships, and creating meaningful learning experiences.
The danger begins when we confuse a tool with a teacher. Teaching has never been simply about delivering information. The best educators recognize when a student is discouraged before anyone else notices. They know when to challenge, when to encourage, and when to simply listen. They build trust over months and then years. They understand the social, emotional, and cultural experiences that shape how students learn. No algorithm, regardless of how sophisticated, can genuinely replace those human relationships.
The concern extends beyond humanoid robots. Artificial intelligence should be used with great caution because it can easily become a substitute for learning instead of a support for learning. If students rely on AI before they understand a concept, they may complete assignments without developing the knowledge, reasoning, and problem-solving abilities that education is meant to cultivate. A beautifully written essay generated by AI may earn a good grade, but if the student cannot explain the ideas independently, education has failed its purpose.
The same principle applies to educators. AI is most valuable when it is used by professionals who already possess deep expertise. An experienced worker, teacher or researcher knows how to evaluate AI’s output, identify inaccuracies, recognize bias, and improve what the technology produces. That is no different from using SPSS to analyze research data. Statistical software does not replace knowledge of research methods; it enhances the work of someone who already understands them. Likewise, AI should enhance teaching and learning, not replace the expertise required to teach well. When users lack foundational knowledge, they may accept incorrect information without questioning it. In those cases, AI becomes less a learning tool than a barrier to genuine understanding.
This distinction matters because education is not about producing answers. It is about developing minds capable of asking better questions. Students learn through curiosity, productive struggle, discussion, reflection, and revision. Those experiences build critical thinking and intellectual independence. If AI removes the struggle from learning too early, students may become more efficient but less educated.
The Salamanca sex doll teacher also reminds us that educational decisions never occur in a vacuum. The district serves students within the Allegany Territory of the Seneca Nation. Indigenous communities, like many historically marginalized communities, have experienced generations of educational policies designed without meaningful collaboration. New technologies should never be imposed simply because they are available. They should be introduced only after transparent public engagement with educators, families, students, and community leaders whose lives will be affected.
The conversation also extends beyond schools. Artificial intelligence carries high environmental costs that remain largely invisible to most users. Training and operating advanced AI systems currently requires massive data centers that consume extraordinary amounts of electricity and large quantities of water for cooling. As AI becomes integrated into nearly every aspect of society, communities will increasingly confront difficult questions about energy production, water resources, environmental sustainability, and infrastructure investment.
These are not merely technical challenges. They are democratic policy questions. Who decides how much electricity should power AI systems? How should communities balance economic development with environmental sustainability? What standards should govern water consumption by data centers? How transparent should technology companies be about their environmental footprint? These decisions affect everyone, yet they cannot be left exclusively to private corporations. They require public debate, legislative oversight, and citizens in democratic decision-making.
Education raises equally important policy questions. How will student data be protected? Who owns conversations between children and AI systems? How will schools address algorithmic bias? What safeguards will ensure that AI supplements rather than replaces certified educators? These questions deserve careful consideration BEFORE AI becomes deeply embedded in classrooms.
The New York State United Teachers union and many others are right to call for thoughtful guardrails for AI and robots. Schools have a responsibility to evaluate new technologies carefully, involve their communities in decision-making, and ensure that innovation strengthens rather than weakens education. The goal should not be to place increasingly human-like machines in front of every student. Let’s focus on how to empower teachers, pay them, and give them tools that allow them to spend more time doing what only people can do.
Artificial intelligence has the potential to be a tool that supports human expertise, not a substitute for it. We should be investing in outstanding teachers and focusing on searching for technological replacements. We should be helping students think more deeply together. Education has always been, and always will be, a profoundly human endeavor. AI should help us protect that truth, not cause us to forget it.
