The NAACP is again standing up for transparency and accountability for charter schools. Considering the ongoing failure of online and traditional for-profit charter schools, it makes sense that California is on the cusp of explicitly banning them via AB 406. If California takes this step, I suspect that other states will follow our lead. Exclusive to Cloaking Inequity, here is the letter from the California NAACP that was recently given to Governor Brown seeking that he sign the bill. I hope that the Governor decides his legacy will be one of transparency and accountability to address the poor performance and malfeasance that has been documented extensively in the for-profit charter school sector. I suspect Betsy DeVos won’t be pleased if Governor Brown signs the ban, considering that more than 80% of charters schools in Michigan are for-profit and she invested in for-profit charter schools prior to becoming US Secretary of Education.
